Are the young bloods over taking the standard bearers?
Fresh Blood
Six weeks in and the players leading the league in scoring at their positions right now may not have been the guys you would expect to find there by this point in the season. Some big name standard bearers who regularly occupy these positions have disappeared with new younger replacement taking their place. Take these examples for instance. Normal Standard bearers like
Roy Halladay -19 (15 day DL)
Johan Santana 0 (15 day DL)
Cole Hamels 61.9
Zack Greinke 89.5
R.A Dickey 76.5
Jared Weaver 0 (15 Day DL)
Now look at some of the SPs in the top 10, guys like
Matt Harvey 324.2 (2nd overall)
Clay Buchholz 307.9 (4th overall)
Yu Darvish 305.9 (5th overall)
Hisashi Iwakuma 297.9 (6th overall)
Shelby Miller 281.2 (8th overall)
Patrick Corbin 245.2 (13th overall)
Names that we, until now, haven't been used to seeing at the top of the charts. Perhaps a changing of the guard has arrived, especially when u consider some of the names at the top of the other positions like
C[/u]
Evan Gattis 94 (10th)
1B[/u]
Chris Davis 210 (1st)
Paul Goldschmidt 195 (2nd)
Anthony Rizzo 171 (5th)
2B[/u]
Matt Carpenter 153 (7th)
Jose Altuve 145.5(8th)
Josh Rutledge 130.5 (11th)
3B[/u]
Manny Machado 196.5 (2nd)
Josh Donaldson 165 (7th)
Kyle Seager 140 (9th)
SS[/u]
Jean Segura 184 (2nd)
Andrelton Simmons 126.5 (9th)
LF[/u]
Nate McLouth 164.5 (8th)
Starling Marte 161 (10th)
CF[/u]
Gerardo Parra 160 (8th)
RF[/u]
Norichika Aoki 172 (6th)
RP[/u]
Edward Mujica 218.2 (3rd)
Seems like youth is perhaps even more important now than we thought with the lack of production from perennial league leaders. It's only about a quarter of the way through, so there is lots of time for things to change. Just something interesting to keep an eye on.
Week six trophies are assigned. Have a great week folks!
