Because we are being insistent on a post season roster freeze of some sort, and because there are legit concerns over what that would mean for playoff teams with injuries, I thought this might be a good idea. How about adding a "60 day DL/LTIR" for this league? For those in the football league, you already have an idea where I'm going here. For the rest of you, what would happen is if a player already on your roster was to be placed on the MLB 60 day DL, you would have the option of putting said player on the FPBL LTIR. Upon doing so, you would be able to cut the player and replace him with someone else. The player on the list would still be your property, though once placed on the LTIR you would not be allowed to trade or reactivate the player to your roster for the rest of the season.
I think adding an LTIR would help lessen the burden of the roster freeze and allow teams to replace players who are out long term (IE. pitchers who are out with Tommy John, hitters who have injured Achilles, etc) and allow teams to find replacement heading into the playoffs. If a guy were to be shut down in September (like Jake Arrietta was) and placed on the 60 day DL so a team could add another player to their 40 man roster, you as a playoff team could then send your guy to the LTIR and add someone else for the playoffs. Ok, what do you think? This is just one way to try and lessen some of the burden of the roster freeze. Fire away boys!

Here is the language of the LTIR in our football league. I would think our would be very similar, though tweaks would have to be made to fit for baseball:
Each team has 2 LTIR (Long Term IR) spots which can be used to reserve players who are out for the season. To place a player on the LTIR, an owner must follow the following process:
1) Player must be on the NFL IR
2) Owner then posts on the message board the LTIR request. Within the post, please provide the player's name, NFL team he belongs to, position, and your team name. In the subject of the post please write your team name and "LTIR Request".Also please include a link to prove he is on the NFL IR.
3) After receiving a confirmation email/post from LM rep, owner will cut LTIR player. After approval is given by LM rep, player is put on the LTIR and then the Owner cuts LTIR player from active roster and is free to use this spot whatever way owner desires. Note that nothing is official until an email/post is sent by LM rep and player name is posted on the LTIR thread.
Once a team places a player on the LTIR that player cannot be traded, dropped, or activated until after the championship game. Also, only players who were on said team before they were placed on the NFL IR would be eligible to be placed on that team’s LTIR.
Owners who attempt to add players whom appear on another owner’s LTIR or do not follow the above listed process or whom try to add players from another teams LTIR will face the following process and penalties:
1) Team will receive a warning from the LM and/or LM rep and the reversal of offending transaction
2) Offending team will incur a loss of their lowest draft selection
3) Offending team will incur a loss of their highest draft selection
4) Offending team will incur a Stiffer penalty as deemed needed by the LM which may include expulsion
These players will be removed from the LTIR at season end and are subject to normal league rules governing their return to the active roster.

Love the idea and will vote for this. I don't know that it would be something that is utilized too often, but still a nice system to have in place. A couple of questions/thoughts. If a player is put on the 60 DL in the earlier parts of the season is back before the season ends, does that mean I cannot recall him to my team?
That being said, this seems to be something that is totally separate from the roster freeze issue. I assume we'll open that can of worms at some point. I'm not sure I see too much how this would impact the playoff roster freeze, as the 60 day DL isn't utilized all that much and even less so in September when teams don't really have too much of a need to put a guy on the DL (see Ethier, Andre - 2011....not bitter).
I like having this in place, just not sure how it'll impact the potential playoff roster freeze.

I'll let Jim confirm this, but when we were talking about adding this the other day I got the distinct feeling he wanted it to be like the football league. So no, you would not be able to re add the player to your roster until next season.
Well, I know of a couple of teams who placed players on the 60-day DL in August (Baltimore for one) in a n attempt to open up a 40 man spot in September. My thought was that adding an LTIR would help out a little if players were placed on the 60 day dl in August, allowing teams to replace them before the FPBL regular season ended. If a MLB team places a guy on the 60 day dl in September, it isn't going to help one of our teams out anyway since with a roster freeze in place you wouldn't be allowed to add a free agent anyhow.

Has this been decided already? This is going to be a HUGE issue if it's just decided that no players can be added to a roster in the playoffs. There has GOT to be a middle ground resolution. As the rules are right now, if a player is put on the 60 day DL (or 15 day DL for that matter), we can add a replacement player so having the LTIR would be helpful.

If we do a LTIR, I want it to basically be a haven for players who have been shut down for the season (I'm looking at you Josh Johnson!!!), so I would not be in favor of allowing teams to bring guys back from the LTIR during the season. If a player might return at some point in the MLB season it would then becomes the owner's choice. Use an IR spot and wait it out, or shut him down for the season.

I agree, there is going to me some middle ground. But I would also say that a roster freeze, in some form, is going to happen. We are discussing this over in the "roster freeze" thread, so feel free to post your thoughts on this there.
