I wouldn't mind seeing a little adjusting of the pitching points.
I would prefer less of a pentalty for losing or blowing a save. Maybe reel it back to -5 vs -10. Pitchers seem to take too big a hit for an off day. I'm fine with losing points, but it seems to hammer teams a little too much.

Well, with the draft a mere 4 days away, i think it's obvious that there will be no rule changes before the start of the season. However, any suggestions will be considered and discussed during the season for any possible changes for next season. We would love to hear what everyone thinks.

I'm fine with this penalty, however I do agree that its a pretty big hit. I think the six start max should be removed to combat this penalty. Either that or open up more SP slots.

I've given some thought to tweaking the pitching scoring, but haven't really come to any conclusions yet. There are a couple of things to keep in mind though:
What's killer with the penalties is the loss/blown save combo. You're talking about a HUGE hit that could make the difference between winning or losing a week. I'll admit that this was an oversight on my part and is something that I'd like to resolve without unbalancing the pitcher scoring.
I'm not upping the 6GS limit. I don't want teams to be able to simply stream SPs, and as it stands you could potentially get ten starts in a week if the stars align. This goes completely against what I want, and upping the GS limit at all would only make this worse. I would like the emphasis to be more about getting a staff of five or six SPs instead of just rolling out as many as you can in a week to rack up the Ks and Ws.
Another option I have considered is scoring quality starts in lieu of wins. This would set up a situation where a SP could get a L without a QS, which would end up with a penalty, a L and a QS which would cancel out, or a QS and either a no decision or a W which would result in him getting rewarded. I haven't done the research but I would think that would mitigate losses a bit for SPs.
The problem with changing the scoring set up is that I went through a lot of trouble to try and balance things out as best I could. If you look at the year end totals there's a pretty good balance between SPs and batters, and any potential scoring changes would have to keep that intact. I get that it's a H2H league and that we also need some balance on a week to week basis, but the key is to achieve balance on for each week without sacrificing the year end totals.
Anyway, all of this is just a very long way to say that I hear you, and I'm open to suggestions. Let's keep the discussion going and see what we can come up with. This would also be a great time to let me know if you have a PhD in statistical analysis or something so that I can let YOU crunch all the numbers, lol.

That's it exactly Jim. The blown save / loss combo just hammers a team.
Obviously, a team should take a hit when their closer flat out blows it. But I'm not sure if that 1 bad game should completely take a team out of the running for that week (and I can think of 4-5 games off the top of my head last year alone, I solely lost from 1 bad outing by my closer). IMO, 1 outing, by 1 player, shouldn't have that much influence on a week's outcome.
That just seems too strong a penalty and from what I've seen, some teams (understandably) alter the way they approach their lineups accordingly, which I think threatens the integrity of the game a little bit. I don't think a common lineup strategy should be... if I don't have a proven closer, then I won't play any or only 1 just so I don't take on the chin. I agree altering the capped starts isn't the solution. I like that element and you're spot on Jim, balance is the key to scoring all fantasy systems. So I'm not sure I'm helping much other than pointing out a perceived flaw.
Maybe just removing the blown save element (-10) would help, since more than likely a pitcher who blows a save is already taking an array of negative points (-2 for each walk, -2 for each hit, -4 for each run, -10 possibbly for the loss) and probably isn't getting many counterbalance points like (+5 for each inning pitched or +2 for KO).
A typical line might be:
2/3 IP, 5 hits, 1 ko, 1 bb, 2 earned runs, 1 blown save, 1 loss which would equal -28 points vs -38 points
That seems like a more than enough penalty for a bad outing and that 10 extra neg points can make a huge difference in a week's win or a loss.
Just a suggestion and there are probably better ones out there than that. I certainly can live with whatever is decided. You guys do a great job with this league and obviously put in a ton of time to make sure it runs smooth! And from one commish to another, I truly appreciate all your guys' hard work! It's just been a genuine sore spot for me the last couple years.
Best wishes and I can't wait for all of this to start!

Let me just again say that this is all just me spitballing, but I'm all for opening this up for discussion and getting ideas.
Without having any idea how it will impact the scoring system, I'm not totally against the idea of simplyeliminating the penalty for blown saves. This would create a situation where there would be a middle ground where a closer could blow the save but not lose the game and really just kind of break even. It would be similar to what happens in the current setup when a guy blows a save but his team wins the game. The W would cancel out the BS, only if we don't count BSs then the W could act like a Sv. Make sense?
The key, and I'm with you 100% on this Mike, is that one bad game shouldn't kill your week, whether it's a RP, SP, 1B, or whatever. On the other hand, pitcher's tend to have more of an impact on wins and losses than position players, and closers arguably have th egreatest impact of all. If they have a bad outing, teams lose. I would like to see this reflected in our scoring, but the problem is translating that game to game impact to a weekly mathcup.
I'll be honest with everybody, I'm not going to do any serious number crunching right now. I've got some offseason stuff to handle in my football league and then I can switch my attention to this. That doesn't mean I'm not willing to discuss it, just that I'm not doing any math at the moment, lol.

I like the idea of eliminating the blow save category if and only if a save is knocked down a few points. Right now there seems to be pretty darn good balance for yearly scoring totals across all positions. Eliminating the blown save could sway that a bit unless you knock a save down a point or two.

Obviously any tweaks to the scoring system would have to be looked at very carefully to make sure that it doesn't knock things out of whack. Eliminating blown saves would increase closers total point output, and this would have to be balanced out in some way. The thing is that in the process of balancing out their year end production we don't want to diminish their weekly value too much either.
I haven't looked into this too much yet, but I will, and when I do I'll let everybody know what I come up with. Keep firing away with ideas though.
